PYGMIES DANCE JAZZ – 天真傲慢探檢者的"紀錄片"

在讀 Huib Schippers 今年剛出版的新書 Facing the Music: Shaping Music Education from a Global Perspective 時,讀到了關於這段影片的描述。到 Youtube 找了一下,居然真找到了這個段落: 這是由來自美國 Kansas 州的一對夫婦,Martin and Osa Johnson,於 1930 年代,在中菲針對 Pygmy 族所拍攝的紀錄片,取名為 Congorilla。看了以後,雖然早就充分瞭解在當時歐美殖民主義盛行時期的背景,但還是令人驚訝於這個紀錄片製片 (Martin) 的無知與不自覺(?)顯露出的傲慢與優越感。難以想像,居然可以想得出要這種「帶給這些小野蠻人」(the little savages)、這些「孩子般的 pygmies」(child-like pygmies),「我們的摩登音樂」的想法。裡面這段話更令人瞠目結舌: 「It was remarkable the way they quickly caught the rhythm of our modern music; sometimes they got out of time, but […]
